Kerb danger

The truth about winter driving

DRIVERS should be careful to steer clear of kerbs in the worst of winter weather.

Tyres are easily damaged when cars slide out of control in snow and icy conditions and run off the road, according to tyre dealer network Protyre.

'Striking the kerb can lead to the tyre and wheel misalignment that causes un-even wear and premature tyre replacement," says a spokesman.

'In other cases the tyre sidewall can be pinched between the kerb and the wheel and air can leach from the tyre, leading to severe under inflation.

'We would advise motorists against driving too closely to kerbs because of the additional risk of running over debris that's not visible that could also cause tyre damage.'

Free car tyre safety checks are on offer over the Christmas and New Year holiday period at the firm, the UK's largest independent tyre dealer network.
