An elderly woman was subjected to a "horrific and terrifying" assault and abduction, police said.
The woman, who is thought to be in her 70s, was found "extremely shaken" in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire on Wednesday.
Police believe the woman was visited by the suspect in her home in Bearsden, on the outskirts of Glasgow, shortly after 1pm.
Subsequently, she was taken to Milngavie Shopping Precinct, in Milngavie, where they were approached by police officers.
They drove off "at speed" in a white Skoda with the elderly lady in the passenger seat.
The victim was found in nearby Clober Road a short time later. The car was abandoned in Birrell Road, Milngavie, and the suspect made off on foot towards the Clober Golf Course area.
The suspect is described as a white man, in his 30s, who was wearing dark jeans and a white top with stripes on the arm.
The elderly lady is extremely shaken by the incident but has not been seriously injured, Strathclyde Police said.
Detective Inspector Alasdair Anderson said on Wednesday: "This has been an horrific and terrifying attack on an old lady in her 70s who is not in good health at the moment. Officers working on the inquiry are determined to bring the man responsible to justice.
"I would ask anyone who was in the Milngavie Precinct around 2pm today to contact us as soon as possible. Did you see a white Skoda car? Did you witness anything that happened in the precinct?"
