AN Airdrie-based youth football team met one of the greats of the modern game following a competition on Merseyside.

Gartcairn Youth Academy’s under-8 squad received their trophies after the RT&T tournament in Southport from ex-Rangers and England star Paul Gascoigne.

The Monklands youngsters thoroughly enjoyed two days of keenly contested matches against sides from Liverpool and its surrounding area.

A spokesman for the club and said: “We would like to thank Benson Box for their sponsorship of the mini-buses for the trip.”

Gartcairn’s under-12 squad are looking for players born in 1998 for next season. Anyone interested should call Robert McCallum on 07818 002241.
