Red squirrels given lifeline

A new effort to save Scotland's under-threat red squirrels has been launched with the creation of 18 "safe havens" across the country.

The refuges will be managed to create environments preferred by red squirrels but shunned by greys.

The Forestry Commission Scotland is behind the project which will use around 100,000 hectares of existing forest areas.
