The prospect of introducing legislation to tackle the "abhorrent practice" of forced marriage is to be consulted on, communities minister Stewart Maxwell said.
The Scottish Government consultation Forced Marriage: A Civil Remedy? comes after the introduction of legislation in England and Wales through the civil courts.
"Whether to marry and to whom should be a decision entered into freely," Mr Maxwell said. "Forced marriage is a violation of human rights, an infringement of liberty and an abhorrent practice which has no place here in Scotland."
