Airdrie soldier Scott Harvey
An Airdrie soldier is set to give his family the perfect Christmas present by returning home from Afghanistan for the festive period.
Staff Sergeant Scott Harvey (41) took a break with a difference from his Airdrie-based furniture restoration business to deploy to Afghanistan as an Army Reservist.
But Scott will soon arrive back to his Glenmavis home into the loving arms of wife Heather and children Zoe and Leah during a break from military service.
A delighted Scott said: “The support from home and from Heather has been really great.
“I’m really looking forward to getting home for the Christmas season and Hogmanay on my rest and recuperation period.”
Scott has been a member of the Territorial Army (now called the Army Reserve) for the past 24 years.
He has operated in war zones before, in Iraq in 2003 and 2005, as a driver.
This time he has joined up with the Military Stabilisation and Support Group (MSSG) in order to help the local population with support for civilian projects in central Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan.
Part of Scott’s job involves the construction of Orthodox Building Earthworks (OBE).
This is an Afghan built and maintained compound for the use of the Afghan police and army.
The aim of Scott’s building work is to provide a secure base from which to operate in their attempts to maintain the security of the local area.
Scott said: “Being cheaper to build and maintain, the benefits of the OBE, over and above their protection levels, is their longer term sustainability.
“I’m enjoying the role and it is very different to my time as a driver in Iraq.”
Former Chryston High School pupil Scott will complete his tour of duty in March 2013.
