POLICE in Airdrie are hoping that witnesses will come forward after a man attempted to steal money from a pensioner in a busy town centre street.
The 73-year-old woman was left shaken but uninjured following the robbery attempt at around 2pm in Graham Street.
The mugger approached the woman on the pedestrian area of Graham Street near Bank Street, close to Henderson’s the jewellers and grabbed her by the arm, demanding money.
The frightened pensioner held on to her bag that was around her neck and attempted to kick her assailant who then fled the scene.
The woman then made her way to the town centre Post Office on the corner of Bank Street and Hallcraig Street where staff noticed her in a state of distress.
Post Office staff comforted the distraught pensioner and contacted police.
One shop worker said: "It’s shocking that something like this could happen in broad daylight on such a busy street."
Anyone who may have witnessed the attack or with information on the assailant is asked to contact Airdrie Police Office on 01236 505100 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
