Calderbank given Christmas tree

A KIND-HEARTED Coatbridge firm have given some festive cheer to appreciative villagers.

Forsyth fruit and vegetable wholesalers in Kirkshaws came to the rescue when they heard that Calderbank needed a Christmas tree.

The firm answered residents’ pleas for a tree as part of St Andrew’s Hospice Light-up a Life appeal.

The plea followed a mindless vandalism attack on last year’s tree and lights which left locals gutted.

Councillor Michael Coyle told the Advertiser: “We were devastated last year when the Christmas tree and lights were vandalised.

“And this year we were struggling to get a tree until the Advertiser put an appeal out to local firms and we are delighted Forsyth’s responded. It’s really made our festive season.”

The tree, now standing proudly in Crowwood Road, was delivered last week and gratefully received by community activists including the Calderbank Regeneration Group.

The community also came together for the switching on of the Christmas lights on the tree.

They joined in some carol signing and enjoyed food and hot drinks in Calderbank Community Centre.

Councillor Coyle was delighted and thanked all those who helped give the villagers a tree to proud of this Christmas.

He said: “I’d like to thank PC Davy Cummings, the community police officer and the manager at Forsyth for donating the tree and the Advertiser for publicising the appeal.

“And a big well done to the people at the Calderbank Regeneration group for their fantastic efforts in doing this for St Andrew’s Hospice.

“Thanks also to Mortons Rolls who supplied food for the event as well.

“The people of Calderbank really appreciate what was done for them.

“I wish them and all my constituents the very best for Christmas.”
