AN award-winning community facility will be able to maintain its varied activity programme thanks to a £4000 donation.
Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre received the grant from affordable housing contractors Wates, who are renovating homes in the area.
The money will help to meet the costs of heating, lighting and electricity at the Haddington Way premises, which hosts more than 20 diverse uses ranging from a playgroup and cafe to cookery and art classes.
Staff had feared that a budget shortfall would prevent them offering that full range of activities for all ages – which also encompasses employment and IT training, advice and volunteering opportunities.
However, the cheque means that all those services have been safeguarded, to the delight of all at the Kirkshaws facility, which recently received a community enhancement award from the Scottish Urban Regeneration Forum.
Centre manager Willie McBride said: “It’s a lively place and we’re delighted that we can continue providing the level of services that we always have.
“There are so many local community uses based at the centre and we were all delighted to receive this donation.
“We received the money thanks to our partnership with Link Homes, who acted as the go-between for us and Wates.”
Management committee vice-chair John Colquhoun added: “This money will fill a gap which recently appeared in our budget and ensure we are able to run our full intended programme.
“It means a considerable number of people and groups in south Coatbridge which rely on this centre for access to support, space and resources will continue to receive these.”
The money was handed over by representatives of Wates Giving, the company’s charitable programme which supports projects proposed by employees.
Wates Living Space is currently refurbishing Coatbridge properties on Link’s behalf, and spokesperson Gillian Lavety said: “We’re delighted to help protect services at this well-used community centre.
“Like our partners at Link, we believe in regenerating communities, and services provided at Kirkshaws neighbourhood centre help people enrich and improve their lives.”
