Plans approved for former Coatbridge High

HISTORIC Scotland praised the proposed redevelopment of the B-listed former Coatbridge High as the plans were formally approved.

The sandstone buildings on Dunbeth Road are to be remodelled to become home to Greenhill and Drumpark Primary Schools.

Artist’s impressions have now been released of the Schools and Centres 21 project after North Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee gave the green light.

The drawings show the designs for enclosing the existing courtyard to create a unique games hall, dining and social space.

Historic Scotland had to be consulted due to the “architectural significance” of the building, which has been vacant since Coatbridge High was relocated to £20 million state-of-the-art new premises in October 2008.

Organisation spokesman James Turner said: “The re-use of the former Coatbridge High as a primary school is to be greatly welcomed, giving it a sustainable and guaranteed future for the town.

“From the early stages of this project, it was clear that the council’s design team acknowledged and celebrated its historical, social, and architectural significance.

“They have also introduced fresh and modern architectural features which perfectly compliment this important local landmark.

“Historic Scotland has appreciated the opportunity of being involved in this project from its early inception, which has ensured a smooth consent process.”

The Greenhill and Drumpark Primaries project is one of 10 projects currently underway in the first phase of the £250 million Schools and Centres 21 initiative.

Approval had already been given for the demolition of surplus buildings on the site this autumn during three months of work costing up to £225,000.

The courtyard will be enclosed using transparent materials on the roof and walls to create a high, bright space unifying the two adjacent school buildings.

A new administration block, floodlit synthetic sports pitch, play area, car park and bus drop-off areas will also be created.

Council leader Jim McCabe said: “The plans for this campus look stunning; the development will go a long way towards enhancing the appearance of the area and become a real asset to the community.”

Greenhill Primary is currently located on Coltswood Road, and it is hoped that pupils will move into their improved new building in 2011.

Staff there are currently preparing to take in an influx of new pupils from nearby Gartsherrie Primary, which was one of four county schools to close its doors in June.

Drumpark School is presently located in Bargeddie; the primary department will share the Greenhill campus while the secondary department will become part of the new £40 million St Ambrose High at Townhead Road.
