A BUSINESS Solutions strategy was launched by Coatbridge College at a networking lunch organised by Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce.
John Doyle, college principal and chief executive, told members of the Lanarkshire business community: “Some may find it strange that a college principal would prefer to talk about money and profit before education.
“But I firmly believe that if we are to be serious about a sustainable economic recovery ‘town and gown’ must do more than simply co-exist.
“That’s why the launch of Business Solutions represents a major step in the evolution of Coatbridge College and how it engages with employers and local businesses.
“As businesses operate in increasingly competitive markets and a constantly evolving regulatory framework, it is incumbent on the suppliers of learning and training to ensure that they are flexible and responsive enough to meet the demands of employers.
“By developing Business Solutions, the college has put in place a service dedicated to meeting a broad spectrum of employers’ needs.
“A range of short-term courses have already been developed to ensure employers meet regulations relating to food hygiene, first-aid and care provision - other courses are being actively developed.
“Other products relating to addressing specific business issues and ongoing staff skill needs are also under development, but it is vital that these products meet the needs of the business community.”
He added: “The Scottish Government invests almost £700 million in Scotland’s colleges this year, with returns showing that for every £1 invested is worth £3.20 to the Scottish people and economy.
“These colleges enrol 360,000 students every year, with an average age of 31 and our aim is to provide basic and work-ready skills including IT, communication, and numeracy to help deliver business solutions.”
Chamber president Maurice Logie gave a positive response to the college’s Business Solutions strategy.
He said: “The chamber has been striving - fairly successfully - to extend and facilitate the range of services to members, especially during the economic downturn.
“We welcome this facility being developed by Coatbridge College as an additional medium to ensure businesses meet with compliance on current and forthcoming legislation but also to assist them meet, augment and improve other business development issues.”
