Police concern over motorcyclists

STRATHCLYDE Police have voiced concern over the number of motorcyclists killed on the region’s roads.

Last year, 13 motorcyclists were killed in Strathclyde and in the first four months of 2009, three more have died.

Superintendent Niven Rennie, Head of Road Policing, said: “Over the last few years, we have taken many steps aimed at reducing the number of deaths, crashes and casualties involving motorcyclists, but to date we aren’t seeing a significant drop in figures.”

Of the 13 deaths in 2008, all of those involved were men with an average age of 43 and nine of the casualties took place over the weekend.

Superintendent Rennie added: “Motorcycle riders will always be more vulnerable on the roads than car drivers.”
