ST Bridget’s Primary in Baillieston is set to become one of the greenest schools in Scotland after installing solar panels.
The funding for the £20,000 panels came from a Co-operative grant, as part of the firm’s Green Energy for Schools scheme.
Leading solar energy company Solarcentury will install the panels, which will generate renewable electricity and reduce the school’s reliance on fossil fuels.
A monitor screen in the school building will display how much energy the panels are generating and how much carbon dioxide they have saved to date.
The school will also be able to access their energy data on the Internet, along with educational materials that teachers can download for classroom use.
St Bridget’s head teacher Iain Keddilty said: “It is fantastic to be among the schools chosen to receive solar panels through this generous Co-operative initiative. Schools have a vital role to play in educating the next generation about climate change and using this renewable energy technology to power our own premises will help us to bring that message home to pupils, parents and staff.”
The Co-operative Funeralcare’s local senior funeral director, Charles McGuigan nominated the school for the project.
