A MAN who assaulted his wife by pouring Buckfast over her head has escaped jail - because she wants him back.
Terrence Grant (43), faced prison time at Airdrie Sheriff Court when he appeared for sentencing.
He had also assaulted Lynn Grant on another occasion and breached a restraining order.
The court heard that on January 1 this year Mrs Grant came home to Rochsoles Drive, Airdrie, from a friend’s house and found her husband drinking a bottle of the popular tonic wine.
She tried to take the Buckfast from him as she doesn’t like him drinking and it was during that struggle that the wine was poured over her head.
The first assault had taken place on January 1, 2007 when Grant struck his wife on the nose.
The accused also breached a court order, on May 21 this year, not to go near his wife or enter Rochsoles Drive.
Despite his conduct, the court was told, Mrs Grant wants to be reconciled with her husband.
Grant’s lawyer said: “It is clear he requires some assistance for alcohol addiction.
“But his wife wants him back and wants the bail condition lifted.”
Mrs Grant’s loyalty to her husband almost certainly kept the accused out of prison.
Sheriff Bobby Dickson said: “You are involved with two assaults on your wife and defied a court order.
“The only thing I have to decide is whether it’s three years probation or three years in jail.”
He added: “But I am going to give you three years probation. If your wife is prepared to stand by you, I am prepared to give you this last chance.”
