Schools pupils are ‘first class’ at Lanarkshire Choir Festival

PUPILS from two primary schools in Monklands put on a first-class performance to help make the 2009 Lanarkshire Choir Festival an outstanding success.

Over 470 pupils from six primary schools from North Lanarkshire and six from South Lanarkshire were given a great reception by a packed Motherwell Concert Hall.

The ninth annual festival which was again organised by Supercounty (New Lanarkshire Ltd) and co-sponsored by BOC was compered this year by county-born and internationally recognised mezzo- soprano Linda Ormiston.

The 44-strong choir from St Aloysius' Primary School in Chapelhall, with Julie Harvie as conductor and Michael Reilly on guitar, sang 'Come back to me' and 'Blessed be God'

The choir of 29 pupils from Townhead Primary School in Coatbridge performed 'True Colours' and 'Rhythm of Life', with Victoria Ross as conductor and Laura Hamilton as pianist.

Certificates of distinction were presented to each of the schools taking part to recognise the pupils' efforts and quality of performance.

John Scott, head of Supercounty, said: "The singing and presentation of all the choirs were again of the highest quality and that reflects great credit not only on the pupils but also on their teachers and families for their support.

"They are all a credit to Lanarkshire - and it is hoped that these Certificates will serve to remind pupils of what can be achieved if you make the effort, and hopefully inspire them to develop their own special talents."

Linda Ormiston said: "It was a humbling experience watching and listening to more than 470 children under the age of 12 singing their hearts out and making music together. It's such a rewarding experience for the audience but more especially the children. It was a great evening."

Iain Mulholland of co-sponsors BOC said: "We are pleased to support an event like this which reflects great credit. "
