FIRST year pupils from Caldervale High have defied the credit crunch by raising a record-breaking £2417.65 for Readathon.
Readathon is a national sponsored reading event that is held in schools every year. All cash raised is donated equally between Sargent Cancer Care for Children and The Roald Dahl Foundation.
The money is spent locally, caring for kids and young people suffering from cancer, Hodgkin’s disease, leukaemia, epilepsy, blood disorders or acquired brain injury.
Since 1991, S1 pupils at Caldervale have raised over £18,000 for Readathon.
Head teacher, Karen Kubica, said: “We are delighted to have taken part in Readathon.
“It encouraged our children to read for enjoyment and, at the same time, help other children in the area who are not as well off as themselves.”
Brough Girling, Readathon Chairman, added: “We are thrilled that S1 children from Caldervale High School have enjoyed reading lots of books and we, and the charities, would like to thank them for all the money they have raised.”
