Rising stars are on track for success
A SCHEME aimed at developing young athletes has been hailed a success.
North Lanarkshire Leisure’s two-day Star:track programme targeted kids aged between 7-15, offering them the opportunity to receive professional coaching.
Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Yvonne Murray-Mooney organised the event which took place at Coatbridge Outdoor Sports Centre.
Nearly 100 children participated and were able to test themselves in a number of disciplines.
And with the London Olympics just three years away and the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow, Monklands’ young sporting talent have the chance to achieve their goals on home soil.
“The Star:track events have been a fantastic success with both kids and coaches having a great time taking part,” said Yvonne, a senior athletics development and events officer.
“More than 90 children took part and got the opportunity to try different athletics disciplines, make new friends and, more importantly, have fun.
“The parents and carers who came along gave us some really positive feedback and the kids were delighted to receive UK Athletics Star:track goody bags.
“Myself and the other coaches really enjoyed working with the youngsters.”
Councillor Jim Logue added: “Star:track is a great scheme which encourages youngsters to keep active and enjoy athletics.
“With the International Children’s Games coming to Lanarkshire in 2011, events like this provide a great chance for kids to show off their talents and benefit from first-class coaching.”
Children keen on developing their athletics skills are being invited to join a new community Run, Jump and Throw club which will be based in Coatbridge.
Sessions will begin from August 24 and places allocated on a first come, first served basis.
