KIDS from Monklands schools got a taste of the Olympics at North Lanarkshire Council’s Primary Games.
More than 1200 pupils took part in the fifth annual event which was held at Wishaw Sports Centre.
Youngsters were able to test their skills in a number of different sports including athletics, basketball, badminton, football, rugby, golf and tennis.
Athletes in wheelchairs could also try the sport of boccia where the aim of the game is to throw leather balls as close to a white target ball as possible.
Team GB’s top boccia players, Peter and Stephen McGuire, helped out at the games along with 400 metres runner Chris Robertson, a top ten UK athlete.
Councillor Jim Logue, convener of learning and leisure services, said: “The primary games have been a great experience for everyone taking part.
“North Lanarkshire Council is committed to encouraging people to live healthy lifestyles and to take part in more exercise.
“These games, along with the good work taking place in our schools and by North Lanarkshire Leisure, form part of our approach to ensuring that children are introduced to fun sports at an early age.”
Lanarkshire is preparing to host the 2011 International Children’s Games, the world’s biggest youth sporting event. Up to 1500 competitors from 70 countries will be going for gold at a competition recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
