WAYSIDERS/DRUMPELLIER’S midi section kicked off their preparations for the new season with victories on the Ayrshire coast.
Two teams representing the Langloan club headed to Troon for a date with Irvine on Sunday.
And it was a glorious day for the midis with an S1/S2 mixed team and a combined under-15/under-16 side winning their respective matches.
The S1/S2 players ran in a dozen tries with no reply while the under-15/under-16 outfit fought hard for a 26-24 triumph over their experienced opponents.
Coach Jake Wilson said: “We wanted the first game of the season to be a stern test and that is exactly what we got from the weekend’s rugby.
“Irvine are a very well-drilled and organised side at all levels and that has given our boys something to aspire to longer term.
“It is quite an achievement to travel to the west coast with a squad of 45 boys, some of whom are new to rugby, at the start of the season.
“We look set to grow the numbers over the coming weeks. We’ve learned a lot and this will be discussed at training this week.”
The midis are back in action this Sunday when they compete in the second annual ‘Trojan tournament’ at Langloan.
The competition is held in honour of former W/D 1st XV player Jono Laughran who died in a car crash four years ago.
W/D will face Hamilton and Cumbernauld with a fun day of rugby and off-field activities beginning at 1pm.
Any young players keen on joining the club for the new season are encouraged along to training on Thursday nights at Dunbeth Park from 7pm to 9pm.
