W/D must build on last season’s championship success

WAYSIDERS/DRUMPELLIER RFC coach Jon Shaw has warned his players to forget about last season’s heroics as a new campaign gets underway this weekend.

The Langloan outfit won all 18 games last term as they stormed to the Division One (West) championship.

But ahead of the club’s bow in National League Three, coach Shaw insists their fabulous achievement must be consigned to history.

Waysiders/Drumpellier kick-off the new season away at Helensburgh on Saturday.

Shaw told the Advertiser: “Every coach and every team would want to win, win, win all season. It’s what you aim for.

“Last year was great for us but it is done now and we need to move on and try and build on it.

“We will set small goals and short-term targets but we are expecting the competition to be a wee bit more tougher which means more effort will be needed from us.”

Waysiders/Drumpellier took part in a three-team tournament in Sweden at the weekend and Shaw added: “The last few weeks have gone quite well and we are already looking forward to getting started.

“I think there comes a stage when you just want to go out and test yourselves in a competitive environment to see how the land is lying.

“I’m not too familiar with the teams in our division but we will analyse the opposition two or three weeks in advance of playing them.

“I will be more focussed on how we are doing on a weekly basis.”

Waysiders’ first home game of the season is on Saturday, September 6, when Marr will be the visitors to Langloan.
