Delight as win gives Airdrie golfers top slot in league

AIRDRIE Golf Club’s promotion bid is in top gear after they pushed their way to the top of the Lanarkshire League Third Division.

John Main’s side defeated Carnwath 5.5-4.5 to move to the summit on points difference.

In-form Airdrie had notched up 4.5 points with two games still in progress on the course which allowed Main to relax as he knew victory was assured.

With son Robbie and Graeme Dalzell both 1 up with one hole to play, Airdrie were guaranteed at least a half-point from each match, thus securing overall success.

The pair each lost the last hole to birdie fours, and although the win was achieved by the narrowest of margins, the final scoreline flattered Carnwath.

John said: “I am absolutely delighted with the result and it was nice being out there as the last games were coming in knowing we were guaranteed the win.”

Easter Moffat Golf Club are also sitting top in the Fifth Division after a 7.5-2.5 victory over Strathclyde Park made it two wins in their last two matches.

However, it wasn’t a good week for Drumpellier Golf Club as they suffered two First Division losses at the hands of South Lanarkshire sides.

The team were defeated 7.5-2.5 by Strathaven and then crashed to a 6.5-3.5 loss at Cambuslang.

The only bright note for Drumps was Graeme Gillick halving his contest in his first appearance in over four years in the tussle with Cambuslang.
