Five freed as Rovers clear their decks

ALBION ROVERS have released five players as boss Paul Martin clears the decks for new signings, writes Colin Paterson.

Club captain Robert Walker heads the list of those who have been told they will not be offered fresh contracts.

Reserve goalie David Scott, defender Martin McGoldrick and the midfield duo of Callan Adam and Ross Harris were also freed last Thursday.

In addition, the club have parted company with striker Ian Harty who has decided to look for a deal elsewhere.

Martin told the Advertiser: “I will work hard to try and find these guys new clubs.

“I will do my best for them because they did their best for me when they were here.

“People might be surprised at my decision to release Robert but the defensive side of our game is an area that could be improved upon.

“So I felt it was in the best interests of the club and Robert to have a fresh start and that was something he agreed with me on.

“I want to thank all of them for everything they have done. They were party to a number of good performances over the season, as well as some bad ones.”

The loan duo of Marco Andreoni and Mark Archdeacon have returned to their parent clubs, Dundee United and Motherwell respectively.

Another loanee, full-back Sean Fleming, has signed for Rovers’ third division rivals Montrose after being freed by Dundee United boss Craig Levein.

Martin is looking to bring in new blood and admits he will leave no stone unturned in his quest to identify fresh talent.

He added: “We are really working hard at the moment. Robert Watt went to five games last week while Paddy Connolly went along to three.

“Last Monday I was at Pollok versus Beith, then watched Camelon play Bathgate the following night and saw Arthurlie play Petershill on Saturday.

“On Sunday I stood at the side of the pitch with my four-year-old daughter, my 12-day-old son and three-year-old niece and watched Knightswood and Tower Hearts in an under-21 match at Maryhill.

“We are getting out and about and taking in as many matches as we can.

“The nucleus of our squad will be experienced professionals but we are also looking to bring in young, hungry players who want a chance in the senior game.”
