Amateur Cup: Wellhouse 2 AS Airdrie 0

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CUP

THIRD ROUND:

WELLHOUSE 2 AS AIRDRIE 0

Gutsy Airdrie pushed Central Scottish AFL Premier Division outfit Wellhouse all the way in their weekend cup tie.

But goals from Gary Espener and Thomas Sinclair ended Airdrie’s Scottish Amateur Cup run for another year.

The home team did enough to book their place in the fourth round after overcoming a spirited show from the Monklands men.

And AS Airdrie secretary Neil Brown said: “Wellhouse are a good side and have Scottish internationalists in their squad so we knew what we were up against. But we didn’t show any fear and the guys dug in and produced a very good performance on the day.

“We proved difficult to break down and we felt we caused them some problems.

“We had hoped to go a few rounds further into the competition before drawing a team of Wellhouse’s quality, but it wasn’t to be.

“We stuck with our 4-3-3 formation and it says a lot that they made a tactical change as our holding midfielder was getting on the ball and breaking everything up.”

Brown added: “They will be looking to get at least as far as the quarter-finals.

“We will now concentrate on trying to stay in touch at the top of our league and do well in the Strathclyde and League cups.”
