SKIPPER Paul Lovering says Airdrie’s players must accept responsibility for the club’s desperate plight.
The honest Diamonds captain admits results and performances have not been good enough over the course of this season.
And the 15-year professional has called on his team-mates to finally step up to the mark as Airdrie chase First Division survival.
Lovering looked on as the Diamonds were bounced out of the Scottish Cup at the hands of Raith Rovers last Wednesday night at New Broomfield.
The 34-year-old defender was gutted with the 3-1 defeat that resulted in fans calling for manager Kenny Black to be sacked following a dismal run of only three wins in 25 games.
But the Diamonds’ dressing room leader feels the players should shoulder the blame and believes it’s time to concentrate on the future instead of dwelling on the past.
“It was really disappointing to go out of the cup, especially when there was the prospect of a nice tie against Aberdeen ahead,” Lovering said.
“We were poor. We weren’t good enough last Wednesday night and all of the boys know that.
“It wasn’t great going in on Thursday morning. Everyone was down and we just wanted to get that performance out of our system.
“The team has to take responsibility. The manager can only prepare us as best he can, then it is up to us.
“Nothing is left to chance with the gaffer. He goes over every detail, he is 100 per cent dedicated to his job and I have never met anyone as hard-working as him.
“People have to put their hands up as our performances have not been good enough and our league position isn’t good enough.
“We have discussed the situation, as players, amongst ourselves and we know we need to put a run together quickly.
“Fans are entitled to their opinion but we are giving 100 per cent for the gaffer and that won’t change.
“Unfortunately, the cup is done now. There is nothing we can do about it and the main thing for us is the league.
“We have to concentrate on trying to stay in the First Division.”
Lovering looks set for a return to the Diamonds’ starting line-up when they visit Partick Thistle on February 13 and the left-back is determined to be involved.
“I will, hopefully, play my part in the coming weeks and maybe I can use my experience to help the team,” he added.
“I am feeling fine and I am desperate to get back playing again.
“The team know they will always get the maximum effort and commitment from me.”
